Nutcracker Reflections

This weekend my dear old ballet studio is putting on their version of the Nutcracker. This used to be my absolute favorite time of the year:) It just didn't ever feel like Christmas without the Nutcracker.

Stories of Nutcrackers Past:

-My very first year of doing ballet I tried out for the Nutcracker. I was in the 3rd grade but super tall for my age so I had to audition with the older girls. Sadly, I did not make it:/ A few days later, CLYTIE ADAMS herself called me. Say what? it's true. She informed me that a girl had dropped out of the "Angels" piece and asked if I would like to fill her spot. I just cried I was so happy. What a sweet year.

-When I was in 5th grade I had the amazing opportunity of playing "Clara". This coveted part took me by surprise and I was determined to make the best of it. That year I made more friends than any other. It is also when I met Mike's little sister who was cast as a "party girl". It was also the Christmas my dad was without work. He relates that being the highlight of his year- "watching his little girl be the star of the Nutcracker". It was so special.

-When I made "Snow" on point in the 7th grade I about died. I have no idea how I made it but I was beyond ecstatic if you can imagine. I was so nervous dancing with the older girls and made a whole bundle of mistakes. BUT I learned a ton and worked so stinkin hard.

-When I knew my sophomore year in high school would be the end of Nutcrackers for me it was surreal. I knew it had to come to an end... just not so soon! I still had two more years at the studio, but knew I wanted to try out for musical productions and had to make a choice.  I worked so hard that summer to hopefully get my dream role before I had to quit. I was so blessed that year to get to be a "Waltz Soloist" for my final Nutcracker. Psh...ballet why do I miss you so?

This year, I wish luck to all of those dancing as I reflect on my favorite Nutcracker memories. Break a leg or two ladies. -Meg
